The sun is setting on the last day of June. On the last day of May a friend celebrated her birthday at the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix where catamarans lift off the water of the New York Harbor and fly alongside the skyline of our city thanks to hydrofoil and engine speed. So cool.
We filled June's window with nautical elements,
wine from
coastal vines, and
wordsabout the sea~ we live on the
Brooklyn Riviera, after all(!), which happens to be a prime viewing spot for Saturday's
250th Parade of Sail. Saturday should be once-in-a-lifetime kind of special. Watching ships glide through the Narrows, under the Verrazano, into our city’s ports will never get old~ even on a regular day, even when it's massive cargo ships carrying treasures like the bottles that fill our shelves…Summery ones like
this bursting-with-rocky-minerality Santa Barbara Sauvignon Blanc from an
excellent producer, and
this delicate, Mexico City-distilled Triple Sec, and
this zesty arugula-based Amaro from Campania's Cilento Coast (
it's a veg-eh-tah-ble). When these products from little nooks around the wine and spirit-producing world make the extraordinary journey to our slice of Third Avenue they spark the imagination, a hint of getting to “see the elephant”… in a glass. We'll never believe it's not magic; the cargo ships may as well be flying.
This week our “Friday” tasting is on an out-of-the-ordinary
Thursday. On July 2nd Giovanni will be in the house with a most charming
Verdicchio from Marche's Ancona coast, a Greco & Fiano blend from Basilicata's extinct volcano, Mount Vulture,
Rosato from Maremma, and Morellino di Scansano for your burgers (Giovanni's wife says he moved from Rome to America because he fell in love with hamburgers), alongside a new Sardinian Liqueur distilled from myrtle that will put you in a Mediterranean state of mind. What's more American than Italian wine?! Look out for BBQ Bundles soon.
Wishing you safe and savored celebrations. We'll see you at the shop!
