In the “Central Italy” section of Jancis Robinson and Hugh Johnson's World Atlas of Wine Robinson says…”it is the Verdicchio grape that is responsible for the most exciting white wines”. She further references their capability of aging akin to Chablis. Pievalta proves this point well with this 21 year-old bottling- its development is captivating. Verdicchio's long tradition as Marche's banner grape and its reputation as one of Italy's greatest Italian white varieties is highly respected by Pievalta. This Riserva is sourced from the single vineyard of San Paolo, a 3-hectare site that sits at an average of 200-300 meters above sea level with a northeastern exposure on the Monte Follonica hillside on the Esino River's right bank. Soils are calcareous clay and sandstone in origin. The alchemical symbol on the label represents summer; a reference to the richness and energy of this long-lived bottling- it's silky and savory and golden; its length goes on and on.
