WHERE
Chignin, Savoie, France
Domaine Charles Gonnet is the same 13-hectare family domaine in Chignin whose Jacquère white is one of our go-to Alpine whites. Mondeuse is the other side of that same story. Where the Jacquère is all crispness and lemon, the Mondeuse goes deep: dark fruit, earthy grip, black pepper, and a mineral edge that comes straight from the limestone and clay hillsides above the village.
Mondeuse is Savoie's most important native red grape — ancient, distinctive, and completely unlike anything grown elsewhere in France. It's related to Syrah and shares some of that peppery, savory character, but it's lighter on its feet and higher in acidity, more Alpine in spirit. Gonnet's version is hand harvested, fermented traditionally, and aged to preserve that freshness. Dark cherry, violet, game, black pepper, wet earth, and a clean finish. Drink it slightly cool.
A natural with Savoyard charcuterie, raclette, roast lamb, or anything braised. One of those wines that tastes exactly like where it comes from.
