100% Barbera from old vines on the single Boschi vineyard in Neive. 12 months in large Slavonian oak, 12 months in bottle. Dark cherry, pipe tobacco, bitter almond — and over a decade of age already on it. This is Barbera at its most serious.

Dante Rivetti is a small family estate on the Bricco di Neive, one of the most prized hillsides in the Langhe. The Boschi is their single-vineyard Barbera — 100% from old vines on a plot of calcareous clay soils, facing east to south-west, that the family has farmed for generations. It's the most serious thing they make with Barbera.

The grapes are hand harvested, fermented in steel for 8 days with traditional pump-overs, then aged for 12 months in large 50-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks — just enough wood to round things out without obscuring the fruit. Another 12 months in bottle before release. The result is deep ruby with garnet edges, rich and complex on the nose with dark cherry, spice, calisaya bark, and pipe tobacco, and a full, harmonious palate that finishes with the pleasantly bitter almond note that great Barbera always has.

The 2012 has had time to open up and settle — the tannins are integrated, the fruit is composed. Drink it with braised short rib, tajarin with meat ragu, or kidneys if you're feeling adventurous.
